History of Rowing at Shalom

Shalom began rowing in the schools year of inception, 1984. The first coach was Mr Chris Fixter.

1985 is the first year having school records of rowing, with eight boys and four girls competing. Shalom’s first boat, a coxed four named the Shalom 1, was used at Nationals in Adelaide in 1987. Student, Paul Webb was a member of the crew which placed fourth.

In 1991, parent Paul Smith became the first coordinator for the program. In 1994, the Herb Zunker Memorial Trophy was introduced for “Champion School - Head of the River”. This trophy was followed by the Travelworld Trophy. Shalom remains “Champion School” to this day.

In 1998 Mr. Antonio Castro took over as coordinator with 60 students competing. In 2002 Mr Bob McDougall became the third coordinator for the program.

2006 saw Shalom taking it’s first crew to Nationals, and we were rewarded with a bronze medal in Open boys coxed quad. In 2007, former student Emma McCarthy, represented Australia winning a Silver medal in U/23 Womens Quad at the World Championships. Our program has always been administered by parents and past students. Shalom Rowing looks to continue to offer our students opportunity.
