6/8/17 - Central Queensland Schools Regatta - Saturday June 24 & Sunday June 25, 2017

A new star arose for Shalom at the 2017 Central Queensland Schools Rowing Regatta at Bucca over the first weekend of the June-July school holidays, with year 7 student Tim Chaplin claiming a famous victory in the 1000m boys under-14 single scull final, leading a Bundaberg trifecta, with St Luke’s duo Aiden Davidson and Tobias Reynolds filling the minor placings. He won by 6.45sec. Tallan Foster also did well to qualify for this final as the eighth fastest out of the field of 16 and wound up 8th. It was an amazing effort by Tim, with the 12-year-old having to compete against older rowers and for the first time over 1000m, with all his Head of the River races over 500m. Tim was also cox for the crew of Anna Nicolson, Ella Creighton, Jayde Bradshaw and Emma Nash who placed fourth in the girls’ year 8 quad final. Ethan Weder, who competed strongly at the Australian Championships in the April school holidays, also did brilliantly to take silver in the 2000m boys under-17 single, just 3.93sec behind Dylan Rhodes (Kingscliff HS), with Chaplin’s coach Ryan Barber also qualifying for the final after he and Ethan each took second in their respective heats, but Ryan could not repeat the effort, winding up 8th. Patrick Waters, Sam Nelson, Darcy Hensel, Zac Christiansen and Taitum Staley (cox) also powered to an excellent third behind Trinity Lutheran and Whitsunday Anglican School/Mercy College in the boys’ year 8 quad final. Amy Snare, Clare Evans, Grace Pashley, Jayde Greer and Taitum Staley (cox) also finished a close 4th in the girls’ year 9 quad final. Two Shalom crews also qualified for the boys’ year 8 double final, with Zac Christiansen and Sam Nelson taking 4th and Patrick Waters and Darcy Hensel claiming 7th after Zac and Sam had won their heat. Congratulations also to all other Shalom rowers and coaches who represented Shalom with distinction at this regatta.

22/6/17 - Head of River Regatta - Saturday June 10 & Sunday June 11, 2017

SHALOM produced a highly spirited team performance to place a gallant second to St Luke’s in Aggregate Points and third behind St Luke’s and North in the Bundaberg and District Secondary Schools Sports Head of the River Regatta at Bucca on June 10 and 11. After two tough days of racing, Shalom finished strongly on Sunday afternoon, winning four of the last 10 events, culminating in a famous victory by Ethan Weder, Tom Espe, Ryan Barber, boys’ rowing captain, Ashleigh Pole, and Taitum Staley (cox) in the Schoolboys Quad, taking out the Hardgrave Trophy. Earlier, Ethan Weder also stood tall by beating arch-rival Harry Routh, of Bundaberg High, in the under-17 single. Ethan Weder also combined with Isaac Coyne for silver in the year 11 double, and Angus McDonald, Barber and Ashleigh Pole and his younger brother Josh (cox) for bronze in the schoolboys coxed four. Tom, Isaac and Angus, with Josh as cox, added silver in the year 11 quad, along with Zane Haster.
Our multiple winners included Hamish Young, Darcy Hensel, Zac Christiansen and Patrick Waters. Hamish led a stunning Shalom trifecta in the under-15 single, ahead of Josh Pole and Sam Nelson, while earlier in the day, he, Josh, Darcy, Reece Santalucia and Taitum Staley (cox) had triumphed in the year 9 quad. Hamish and Josh were also runners-up in the boy’s year 9 double. Darcy and Josh (cox) also partnered Zac Christiansen, Patrick Waters and Sam Nelson to a commanding victory in the year 8 quad. Zac and Patrick blew their rivals away in the year 8 double, with Zac also an excellent second in the under-14 singles.
Clare Evans, Amy Snare, Claire Barber, Grace Pashley and Taitum Staley (cox) led the field home in the year 9 quad, while Grace Pashley also grabbed silver in the under-16 singles. Allie Wenning and Anna Nicolson, along with twins Zali and Lili Haster and Clare Evans (cox) were the golden girls in the year 7 quad, while Allie and Anna added bronze with Ella Creighton, Jayde Bradshaw and Emma Nash in the year 8 quad. Zali and Lili placed second in the year 7 double, while Zali finished a commendable fourth in the under-14 singles. Lana Amos was another of our girls to do well, including placing third in both the under-17 singles, and the year 11 double, where she rowed with Emma Broadfoot.
All of our five year 7 rowers were among the medals, with Matthew Parker, Tallan Foster, Lincoln Dwyer and Tim Chaplin taking silver in the quad, coxed by Patrick Waters; Tim and Tallan teaming for silver in the year 7 doubles, and Denyin Rose partnering a Bundaberg High student for silver in the year 8 double. Lincoln was our best in the under-13 singles’ final, leading before battling on for second, with Tallan a close fourth after winning his heat. Lincoln and Matthew collected bronze in the year 7 double, with Tim also a note-worth third in the under-14 singles.
